The Art of Listening

Not every musical gem reveals its beauty at first listen. Some sounds invite us to dream, others challenge our expectations, awaken memories or lead us into unfamiliar territory. Sometimes, it is precisely the unexpected that leaves the deepest impression.
Umami Groove embraces this spirit of discovery. A place in Second Life where music moves beyond familiar club conventions, where rare treasures from the past meet contemporary sounds, and where personal selections give even challenging tracks a new perspective.
Here, music is not simply a soundtrack to the evening. It becomes an experience shaped by curiosity, artistic freedom and the willingness to listen beyond the obvious.
Welcome to Umami Groove – The Art of Listening.

About the Location

Created by Pale Illusion in Second Life, Umami Groove combines a listening bar, lounge and classy sushi restaurant. Following a major renovation, Pale brought her former sushi restaurant Umani Soul and the listening-bar concept together in one space within her evolving Berlin-inspired Underpass sim.

Voices from Umami Groove

In the words of those who wrap us in this cocoon of music.

“Playing at Umami Groove is a unique experience. Unlike a traditional club, the crowd is seated and connected, turning the night into an intimate, immersive space where music demands attention over virtual sushi and conversation. The curation is a liberating way to share rare records and tell a story, blending IDM, dub and ambient techno, and organic acoustic-electronic textures with deep bass. It is an auditory tactile experience where soundtracks meet soundscapes, moving from contemplative and imaginative to sensual or daring, exquisite and experimental, in a cinematic journey driven by spatial depth.”

“play whatever you want,” is the last thing i want to hear. i can do that at home. umami groove has constraints. the space itself makes demands. living here are the sounds of downbeat, nujazz, cinematic trip hop and more. minimal and deep. acoustic and electronic.
the room itself is beautifully minimalist. perfectly lit with a gentle ambience that does not distract from the food or drink or the music.
the space and the people in it demand your presence. they demand more than background music for sushi and cocktails. there must be a story, texture, and flow. the sounds should hold you, feel intimate, and transport you. the music should be calming and energizing and to feel natural and organic. and at some point, it should surprise you and make you think, “this is exactly what i needed.”

For Pale Illusion, music, art and architecture have always been closely connected.
Rooted in Berlin’s underground culture and a DJ journey that began with vinyl in 1993, she brings decades of musical experience into her creative world in Second Life.
Her passion for building and artistic expression shapes spaces where sound, atmosphere and human connection come together.
Umami Groove reflects this vision: a place where music is given room to unfold, where every detail contributes to the experience, and where listening becomes an art of its own.
Sometimes a place catches me before I even know how to describe it. Umami Groove did exactly that.
For me, it feels almost like an acoustic vernissage.
The special performance by Pandora and Sar brought this feeling beautifully to life. Their very individual and expressive selection of tracks created an intimacy that almost allowed a glimpse into their souls.
For a while, the whole evening felt like a beautiful cocoon of music, togetherness and harmony, a space where sound, atmosphere and people simply connected.
A little diamond for those who recognise it as one.
Thank you, Pandora and Sar, for this special performance, and Pale for creating a space where moments like this can happen. 🖤
Hugs, K.
